I’ve always liked the fragrance of Lavender anyway.

New research shows lavender oil is a powerful antifungal agent that fights and prevents skin and nail infections, including Candida albicans. Published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, the study found that lavender essential oil exhibits amazing protection against a wide range of pathogenic fungi — and it works better than all known antifungal drugs at doing so.

Lavender Is An Anti-Fungal

“In the last few years there has been an increase in the incidence of fungal diseases, particularly among immuno-compromised patients,” said professors Ligia Salgueiro and Eugenia Pinto from the University of Coimbra , authors of the study. “Unfortunately there is also increasing resistance to antifungal drugs. Research by our group and others has shown that essential oils may be cheap, efficient alternatives that have minimal side effects.”

The team observed in tests that lavender oil effectively killed fungi that cause a wide range of infections on skin, hair, and nails, including those categorized as Athlete’s food, ringworm, and Candida albicans. Not only was lavender oil more effective than antifungal drugs, many of which no longer work on mutated fungi that have grown resistance to them, but lavender oil use does not cause negative side effects.

“Lavandula oil shows wide-spectrum antifungal activity and is highly potent,” added the researchers. “This is a good starting point for developing this oil for clinical use to manage fungal infections.”

Lavender has many benefits!

The research adds to the growing body of evidence concerning the many medicinal benefits of lavender oil. Previous research has identified lavender oil as a powerful antimicrobial, and studies have shown it also works well as an antispasmodic treatment. Does This Simple Omega 3 Oil Have Power?

Scientists tend to describe their research and findings with facts and figures only, leaving out any emotion. But Prof. Daniel Michaelson of Tel Aviv University’s Department of Neurobiology has uncovered something so potentially groundbreaking he called it “exhilarating” in a statement to the press.

What news could have this scientist so excited? A diet high in omega-3, the fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon as well as walnuts, appears to significant block the negative effects of the APOE4 gene — the “bad” APOE gene found in 50% of all Alzheimer’s patients and in about 15% of the population. Having the APOE4 gene greatly ups your risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease, a dreaded and deadly form of dementia affecting about five million Americans.

Scientists have found that in all there are five molecules known to affect or cause Alzheimer’s. But just how dangerous these molecules are is linked to environmental factors including diet and lifestyle. Omega 3 is often a neglected oil in our diets because most people don’t eat enough foods rich in Omega 3.

Omega 3 Research Is Conclusive!

One of these five molecules, APOE, is created by the apolipoprotein E. gene found in all of our bodies. But, according to Prof. Michaelson, there is a “good” APOE gene and a “bad” APOE gene, which is dubbed APOE4.

He has used animal studies to investigate the effects of diet and environment on carriers of APOE4. So far, his results show a diet high in omega-3 oils and low in cholesterol significantly reduce the negative effects of the Alzheimer’s causing APOE4 gene in mouse models.

“The main take-away message here is that good diets can alleviate the effects of bad genes. Of course nutritionists have had this general idea for a while, but it’s nice to be able to show that this approach can be applied to specifically counteract the negative effects of Alzheimer’s disease-related genes,” Prof. Michaelson said in a statement to the media.

Other researchers have found many natural ways to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, including drinking green tea. Walking regularly and briskly for exercise has also been shown to lower the risk for dementia.

The results of Prof. Michaelson’s discoveries on omega 3, along with more details are slated to be presented at an international conference in Barcelona, Spain this March.

With all that’s going on today in Japan, I thought it would be helpful for us to know some basic facts about radiation and what we could do if we faced a crisis also.

What is radiation?

Radiation is a form of energy. It comes from man-made sources such as x-ray machines, from the sun and outer space, and from some radioactive materials such as uranium in soil. Radiation travels as rays, waves or energetic particles through air, water or solid materials.

Radioactive materials are composed of atoms that are unstable. As unstable atoms become stable, they release excess energy (called “radiation”) through a process called radioactive decay or radioactivity. The time required for a radioactive substance to lose 50 percent of its activity by decay is called its half-life.

The most common types of radiation emissions are alpha, beta and gamma rays.

Alpha particles can be shielded by a sheet of paper or by human skin. But if materials that emit alpha particles are inhaled, ingested or enter your body through a cut in your skin, they can be very harmful.

What can shield radiation?

Beta particles cannot be stopped by a sheet of paper. Some beta particles can be stopped by human skin, but some need a thicker shield (like wood) to stop them. Just like alpha particles, beta particles can also cause serious damage to your health if they are inhaled or swallowed. For example, some materials that emit beta particles might be absorbed into your bones and cause damage if ingested.

Gamma rays are the most penetrating of these three types of radiation. Gamma rays will penetrate paper, skin, wood, and other substances. Like alpha and beta particles, they are also harmful if inhaled, ingested or absorbed. To protect yourself from gamma rays, you need a shield at least as thick as a concrete wall. This type of radiation causes severe damage to your internal organs. (X-rays fall into this category, but they are less penetrating than gamma rays.)Think about this before you allow doctors to continually order x-ray after x-ray.

How can I be exposed to radiation?

Small quantities of radioactive materials occur naturally in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and in our own bodies. People receive some background radiation exposure each day from the sun, from radioactive elements in soil and rocks, from household appliances (such as television sets and microwave ovens), and from medical and dental x-rays. Even the human body itself emits radiation. These levels of natural and background radiation are normal.

Radiation doses that people receive are measured in units called “rem” or “sievert.” (One sievert equals 100 rem.) Scientists estimate that the average person in the United States receives a dose of about one-third of a rem per year. Eighty percent of typical human exposure comes from natural sources, such as sunlight. The remaining 20% comes from artificial radiation sources, primarily medical x-rays.

What are the health effects of exposure to radiation?

Radiation’s health effects can be mild, such as reddening of the skin, or very serious, such as cancer or early death. Radioactive materials dispersed in an urban area pose a serious health hazard. Strong sources of gamma rays can cause acute radiation poisoning or even fatalities at high doses. Long-term exposure to low levels of gamma radiation can cause cancer. Alpha particles (such as americium) small enough to be inhaled can damage people’s lungs and lead to an increased risk of cancer.

The degree of damage to the human body depends on:

The amount of radiation absorbed by the body (the dose)
The type of radiation
The route of exposure
The length of time a person is exposed

Exposure to very large doses of radiation may cause death within a few days or months. Acute radiation syndrome (ARS), or radiation sickness, is usually caused when much of the human body is exposed to a high dose of radiation over the course of a few minutes. Survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs and firefighters responding to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant event in 1986 experienced ARS. The immediate symptoms of ARS are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; later, bone marrow depletion may lead to weight loss, loss of appetite, flu-like symptoms, infection and bleeding. The survival rate depends on the radiation dose. For those who do survive, recovery may take a few weeks to two years.

Exposure to lower doses of radiation may lead to an increased risk of cancer, cataracts or decreased fertility. Radiation exposure, like exposure to the sun, is cumulative. The damage from exposure to radiation may not be apparent for many years.

Children are more sensitive to radiation than adults. Exposure to human embryos or fetuses is of special concern because they are extremely sensitive to radiation.

How can I protect myself from radiation?

The longer a person is exposed to radiation and the closer the person is to the source of radiation, the greater the risk. There are three basic ways to reduce your exposure:

Time: Decrease the amount of time you spend near the source of radiation.
Distance: Increase your distance from the radiation source
Shielding: Increase the shielding between you and the radiation source.

Shielding is anything that creates a barrier between people and the radiation source. Depending on the type of radiation, effective shielding can be something as thin as a plate of window glass or may need to be as thick as several feet of concrete. Being inside a building or a vehicle can provide shielding from some kinds of radiation.

Remember that any protection, however temporary, is better than none at all. The more shielding, distance and time you can take advantage of, the better. Although radiation cannot be detected by the senses (sight, smell, etc.), scientists can detect even the smallest levels of radiation with a range of instruments.

Will potassium iodide protect me?

Taking potassium iodide (KI) pills for protection against a dirty bomb is not recommended. These tablets, now widely available, are promoted by commercial companies for defense against everything from a nuclear plant accident to a dirty bomb explosion. However, KI pills are not likely to offer protection from the radiation spread by a dirty bomb and could actually be harmful to people’s health. KI pills help protect the thyroid gland from the damaging effects of radioactive iodine, but they are of no help if the dirty bomb contains any other form of ionizing radiation. There are many other radioactive sources that could be used instead of, or along with, radioactive iodine, and KI tablets would be useless against them. Many people could also be harmed by the high concentration of iodine in KI because of allergies or other conditions.

What are some sources and uses of radioactive materials?

Radioactive materials are widely used in hospitals, research labs, industry and construction sites for such things as diagnosing and treating illnesses, sterilizing equipment, and irradiating food. Radioactive byproduct material in the United States is regulated by either state or federal laws. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, together with 32 states which regulate radioactive material, have over 21,000 organizations licensed to use such materials for these purposes.

Other man-made radioactive materials come from nuclear power and weapons sites. In the United States, radioactive waste is located at more than 70 commercial nuclear power sites in 31 states. Enormous quantities also exist overseas, especially in Europe and Japan.

Medical procedures, including diagnostic X-rays, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy, make up the most significant source of man-made radiation exposure to the general public. Other legal uses of radioactive materials include industrial radiography, manufacture of gauging devices, gas chromatography, and well logging. It is used in consumer products such as smoke detectors (americium), “exit” signs, static eliminators, and luminous watch dials. Some examples of radioactive materials are cesium, americium, plutonium, and strontium. This is why it’s so important to have a strong “immune” system in place in our bodies.

All human tissues contain small amounts of magnesium:

The adult human body contains about 25 gms of this mineral. The greater part of this amount is present in bones in combination with phosphate and carbonate. Bone ashes contain less than one per cent magnesium. The bones seem to provide a reserve supply of this mineral in case of shortage elsewhere in the body. Another Magnesium Victory

Her eight-year old son had an elevated ANA (antinuclear antibody that indicates some form of autoimmune disease). He was scheduled to see a rheumatologist in March.

Banana “Ice Cream”
Peel, slice, and freeze 1 small banana. Place frozen banana pieces in a blender with 3 tablespoons 1% low-fat milk; blend until thick. Top with 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts.

Banana Salsa

Place 1 sliced peeled banana, 1 cup 1% low-fat milk, 1/2 cup cold black coffee, 2 teaspoons sugar, and 1/2 cup ice in a blender. Blend until smooth—and enjoy.

Natural Cures and Remedies Can Have Side Effects

Before you go ballistic on me and start thinking, “I thought you were all about Natural Cures and Remedies,” read on please…

Maybe you never heard that natural cures and remedies can sometimes have side effects! Why? How is that possible? I thought they were always good for you!

Here are the times when this can happen, even when using natural cures.

When a person is:

  • overweight
  • has frequent colds or flu
  • has a history of prescription or recreational drugs
  • frequently consumes fatty and/or prepackaged processed foods
  • drinks lots of sodas or consumes other sugary drinks
  • consumes foods with artificial colors or chemicals on a regular basis
  • Or when a chronic illness is present

There are many ways to detox the body. Some good and some not worth the money they cost. From my experience, I find a “detoxing diet” to be most effective, least costly and fastest way to get results with less side effects, while bringing the body to an alkalized state, where cancer and fat can’t grow.

Yes, there can be side effects using natural cures, for those who are severely and sometimes even mildly toxic.

Symptoms of a detoxing reaction can be:

  • lethargy
  • temporary all-over muscle aching
  • watery stools
  • stomach cramping
  • mucous or other discharge
  • a coated pasty tongue
  • light-headedness when standing
  • headaches and flu-like symptoms in general

A detoxing reaction may take the form of some of the old symptoms that were previously suppressed by prescription drugs. You may feel sick and think your “natural cures” are not working… Also, detoxing can cause rashes; some all over, others limited to the upper part of the body, including the head! The detoxing process is absolutely essential to achieve health and should never be suppressed with drugs.

Unfortunately, many people will stop their detoxing program when symptoms start and they never achieve good health!

Don’t think the conventional medical establishment is open minded to detoxing. They assume that any symptoms by the body are caused by a microbe, so antibiotics are usually prescribed even if they think the causative reason is a virus.

Medical antibiotics have NO effect on viruses, other than weakening the immune system. This only makes viruses can reproduce more. Antibiotics and other drugs suppress detoxing, the immune system as well as good intestinal flora.

They’ll tell you that there’s “no evidence” that detox diets have any health benefits. (Then in the very sentence, they’ll talk about detoxing for drugs, alcohol, metabolic and diet.)

What I’ve seen over the years of recommending detoxing for healing is that there are many forms of detoxing that will work. Unfortunately, no long term effects will ever be achieved if personal eating habits, bathing habits and medication are not ceased. Detoxing will be a wasted effort and there will be no long term health benefit.

Are You Experiencing Any Of These Health Issues?

Toxic Blood: Toxins are constantly seeping into the bloodstream and tissue from foods, lotions, shampoos, cleaning materials and air. This eventually causes serious health problems.

A polluted, malnourished stomach and intestinal tract is the perfect environment for parasites and worms. In this environment, the rampant incidence of diseases like cancer, heart disease, thyroid diseases, reproductive system dysfunction and diabetes can run rampant.

People suffering from out of control allergies fall into the same group. All of these can be attributed to a sick intestinal track which makes for a severely weakened immune system.

The ground our foods are grown in have eroded and lost the nutrients that were once there. Then, with the added pesticides, insecticides, genetically engineered foods and fertilizers stealing nutrients from the body, it’s easy to understand why we need to detox with natural cures. Add to that all the processed prepackaged, sugary foods consumed, you can only have billions of malnourished sick people…

Most are totally unaware they are suffering from a degree of malnutrition.

Obesity is rampant because people try to satisfy the body’s cravings for nutrients they’re not getting from their diets. Illness sneaks up on people since the body appears to be healthy long before it’s detected.

The rejection of natural cures and remedies has led to the “alternative,” toxic pharmaceutical medications.

Intestines Not Able To Filter and Digest

Digestion begins with the stomach and when the digestive enzymes don’t exist in the proper balance, a problem exists which prevents foods from getting into the intestinal tract.

When people take Tums, Rolaids, Prilosec and other antacids, the necessary digestive enzymes are diminished. Those acids are necessary for proper digestion and mixing before going into the intestinal area!

When the intestines have mucoid plaque built up without the proper stomach acids to break down the foods, a serious interference with the digestive process happens.

For years now, colony collapse disorder (CCD), a mysterious condition where entire bee colonies die for no apparent reason has been inflicting bee populations across both Europe and the US., but scientists from the United Nations say the phenomenon is now a global crisis, afflicting bees across China, Japan, and Africa, as well as in other places.

The report, issued by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), explains what many readers already know, mainly that without bees, there will be no more food. Bees are one of nature’s primary pollinators, and over 70 percent of the world’s food supply relies on them to grow.

“Human beings have fabricated the illusion that in the 21st century they have the technological prowess to be independent of nature,” said Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director. “Bees underline the reality that we are more, not less, dependent on nature’s services in a world of close to seven billion people.”

One such mode of “technological prowess” is the flagrant and irresponsible use of genetically-modified organisms (GMO). GMO technology is heavily reliant on the use of toxic pesticides and herbicides, which several recent studies have pinned to the widespread bee deaths.
In January, a leaked document revealed that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) actually knowingly approved bee-killing pesticides known as clothianidin. This Bayer Crop Science chemical has been identified as a primary instigator of colony collapse disorder (CCD), and yet it has remained freely available on the market since 1993 when the EPA first approved it.

Pesticide use is obviously not reserved just for GMOs, either. The entire industrial agriculture system that dominates the majority of the US food supply is heavily reliant on toxic pesticides of all varieties, which reports say now pollute over 90 percent of the nation’s rivers.

We are in deep trouble if our government doesn’t stop the big chemical and pharmaceutical companies from praying on human beings health issues.

(OrganicJar) St Petersburg, Florida — With the disaster in the Gulf keeping everyone on edge looking for a solution, the answer might lay in material manufactured by a Colombian company with an office in Florida.

The company, Global Environmental Technology, has a product that is 100 percent organic and was invented in 1998 by its president, Carlos Forero. He won science competitions in Switzerland and Austria for the product, which encapsulates oil and cleans the material up.

Not only does the product clean up the oil, it can also be recycled for use afterwards. In addition, if birds are contaminated, the product can used for them as well.

You would think that with the disaster in the Gulf, and oil spilling out and heading to the beaches, the Coast Guard would be interested in the product. However, the company says all they are getting is red tape and getting nowhere.

Liz Cabot, Forero’s sister, says the Coast Guard said come back when they got EPA approval.

When EPA reviewed the product and said it could be used, the company went back to the Coast Guard and Cabot says they were told they had to fill out paperwork. Cabot says they have been waiting and waiting for the paperwork to clear.

And while the paperwork is being cleared, the oil continues to spread in the Gulf.

(OrganicJar) Lowell, MA – Eating about a handful of pecans each day may play a role in protecting the nervous system, according to a new animal study published in the current issue of Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research. The study, conducted at the Center for Cellular Neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, suggests adding pecans to your diet may delay the progression of age-related motor neuron degeneration. This may include diseases like amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Researchers suggest vitamin E – a natural antioxidant found in pecans – may provide a key element to neurological protection shown in the study. Antioxidants are nutrients found in foods that help protect against cell damage, and studies have shown, can help fight diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer and heart disease. Pecans are the most antioxidant-rich tree nut and are among the top 15 foods to contain the highest antioxidant capacity, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“These findings suggest regular consumption of pecans may provide significant nutritive and antioxidant benefits for your body,” said lead researcher Thomas B. Shea, PhD.

Dr. Shea and his research team carried out a number of laboratory studies on three groups of mice specifically bred to demonstrate severe decline in motor neuron function that are commonly used in studies of ALS. Each of the three groups was fed a control diet or one of two diets containing differing amounts of pecans ground into their food. Standard testing methods were used to determine how well the mice scored relative to motor neuron functions, both before and after they were provided with one of the three diets.

Mice provided a diet supplemented with pecans displayed a significant delay in decline in motor function compared to mice receiving no pecans. Mice eating the diet with the most pecans (0.05%) fared best. Both pecan groups fared significantly better than those whose diets contained no pecans. The result was based on how the mice performed in highly specific tests, each of which compared mice on the control diet with mice consuming pecan-enriched diets.

“Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean eating bland,” said Beth Hubrich, a registered dietitian with the National Pecan Shellers Association. “Pecans are a tasty addition to a healthy diet and scientific research continues to show they’re good for you as well.”

Eating a handful of pecans will also provide you with more than 19 vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and several B vitamins, Hubrich said. Pecans are naturally cholesterol-free and sodium-free.

Indoor Plants Could Save Your Life

(OrganicJar) New research shows that ornamental plants can drastically reduce levels of stress, ill health and boost performance levels at work because they soak up harmful indoor air pollution. Researchers have now identified five “super ornamental plants” which every workplace should have to clean up indoor air. They include English ivy, waxy leaved plants and ferns (see a full list below).

According to a World Health Organization report in 2002, harmful indoor pollutants represent a serious health problem that is responsible for more than 1.6 million deaths each year. Indoor air is up to 12 times more polluted than outdoor air in some areas, with air quality affected by chemicals from paints, varnishes, adhesives, furnishings, clothing, solvents, building materials and even tap water. These produce so-called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that have been shown to cause illnesses in people who are exposed to the compounds in indoor spaces.


Now horticulture experts in the US have tested a number of ornamental indoor plants for their ability to remove harmful VOCs from indoor air. Stanley Kays, the lead researcher at University of Georgia, said some indoor plants have the ability to effectively remove harmful VOCs from the air and not only improve physical health, but also someone’s wellbeing. Adding these plants to indoor spaces can reduce stress, increase performance at work and reduce symptoms of ill health.

The research team tested 28 common indoor ornamental plants for their ability to remove five volatile indoor pollutants. Of the species tested, purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternata), English ivy (Hedera helix), waxy leaved plant (Hoya carnosa) and Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus) were rated best for removing air pollutants. The purple heart plant (Tradescantia pallida) was rated superior for its ability to remove four of the VOCs.
Prof Kays, writing in the journal HortScience, said: “The volatile compounds tested in this study can adversely affect indoor air quality and have a potential to seriously compromise the health of exposed individuals.”

The study concluded that simply introducing common ornamental plants into indoor spaces has the potential to significantly improve the quality of indoor air.
